Here's the set:
I'll preface by saying that this was my first Used show, so I don't know if the length of this set is the norm for them... But 10-12 songs does not a headlining gig make. Maybe I've just been spoiled by bands that play for a solid 90 minutes to two hours, and only stop for banter two or three times during the set. I've read other recent posts mentioning that Bert has been recovering from a bout of the flu, perhaps that was a factor in tonight's performance, but... From where I was standing, it seemed that 80% of his vocals were prerecorded and he was simply mouthing the words. A number of times when he was actually singing the recorded tracks was still up, giving a strange chorus-y effect. He would move the mic away or drop his arm completely and yet the vocal levels would stay the same. Same goes for the backing vocals - Quinn would come up to the mic after the vocals started, or back away mid-lyric, while the entire part played through the PA. I love the band, I love every song from every album they've released, yet I was wholly disappointed with the 'live' show. Not counting the chatter between songs, they only played for roughly 42 minutes. The on-off singing overtop of the pre-recorded vocals was disconcerting and a total let-down. The most surprising part of the show [in a good way] was the interlude with Street Drum Corps between Sick Hearts and PHA. It was really, really cool to watch... To top the night off, my friends and I each purchased a 'Shallow Believer' download card from the merch booth - even though we already bought the EP through iTunes - so we could stick around after the show for the Meet and Greet with the band [autographs and pictures]. As we're waiting for the guys to come back in for the Meet and Greet, a staffer informed everyone that each person could only get one item signed [no big deal there] and that there would be NO PHOTOGRAPHS ALLOWED! So we left. I really hope that this show [and maybe the rest of this tour, judging by other posts] is just very limited... Maybe contractually, each band only has so much time, maxing out at an hour for the headliners. Or maybe Bert is still recovering/having issues with his throat - though if that's the case, maybe they should consider taking some time off till he's back to 100%. Whatever it is, I hope they get it worked out, because I would love to see an honest-to-god, top-billed show from them. They have an incredible catalog of songs from which to choose their sets, along with enough energy and raw power to blow fans away. The Used are one of my top five bands, and I would love to see them put on the show I know they're capable of playing. I can't wait to catch them once their off the sponsored tours and out playing on their own. |

i went to two shows on the tour, april 11th and 12th. they were all wicked sick then. however, i have never seen them play with a backup tracks?? thats weird. and ive seen them a lot... the shows set was 9:30-10:30 both nights i was there. i think thats how it is for this tour. they tend to be on tours like this a lot, maybe that has something to do with it?? and i do agree, they dont get enough of a break. he needs to give his voice a rest, not cause i think it sounds bad, because its his health, and he should rest. i do believe after this tour they are recording... thats a bit of a break i suppose |
